Isla Ratones off the coast of Joyuda

Vista Bahía Restaurant (Carr. 102, km 14.1, 787/851-4140, Wed.-Sun. and Mon. holidays 11 A.M.-10 P.M., $19-27) has a cool chrome-and-glass-block exterior with patio dining overlooking the water. It specializes in seafood mofongo and has a full bar.

A welcome departure from the criolla-style seafood restaurants that populate Joyuda, Ceviche Restaurant (Carr. 102, km 11, 787/255-0190, Wed.-Sat. 3-10 P.M., Sun. noon-9 P.M., $15-29) serves a variety of ceviches, paellas, and stuffed crepes.

Located by the hotel pool and overlooking the ocean, Playa Joyuda Restaurant (Parador Joyuda Beach, Carr. 102, km 11.8, 787/241-7140, daily 7:30 A.M.-8 P.M., bar open later, $14-28) is a pleasant patio restaurant serving criolla cuisine, including chicken breast stuffed with shrimp, rabbit in garlic sauce, octopus, conch, lobster and shrimp. Also serves breakfast and lunch.

El Gato Negro (Carr. 102, km 13.6, 787/851-2966, Wed.-Mon. 11 A.M.-10 P.M. or later, $13-22) is an enormous, rustic restaurant right on the water serving a huge menu of criolla-style seafood in a myriad of ways, including stewed, fried, grilled, or in salads, stews, and garlic sauce. It also serves a large selection of empanadillas. There is patio dining out back, overlooking the water. Karaoke is on Thursday nights.
